1,206 Solano Community College employees victimized in W-2 data breach

Solano Community College in Fairfield, Calif., was hit with a spearphishing attack led to the W-2 information for about 1,200 staffers being compromised.

How many victims?  1,206 current and former school employees.

What type of information? The school said the compromised information includes Social Security Numbers, Names, and Wage and Statutory Benefits information, such as State and Federal Tax, FICA, Medicare, Dependent Care, 403 (b), and 457 (b) amounts

What happened? April 28, 2016 the college realized it had been victimized by a spearphishing attack.

What was the response? Solano Community College notified Solano County Sheriff's Office Computer Crime Task Force which is working with the school's IT department to investigate the problem. School administrators contacted the current and former employees suggesting they frequently check their financial accounts, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and possibly put a credit freeze on their accounts.

Details? The school said that on April 28 it realized the request for the W-2 information was from an unauthorized source.

Quote? "We are notifying you so you can take action along with our efforts to minimize or eliminate potential harm. Because this is a serious incident, we strongly encourage you to take measures now to help prevent and detect any misuse of your information. “
