As part of its ongoing campaign against whale hunting, vigilante hacktivist group Anonymous yesterday launched distributed denial of service attacks against Japanese car manufacturer Nissan.

While Japan is associated with the controversial practice, Nissan for its part has no known affiliation with whale hunting. Nevertheless, the company was targeted due to its status as a major Japanese corporation, and was forced to temporarily take down its domestic and global websites on Wednesday while traffic overwhelmed them.

To generate headlines and awareness over its OpWhales campaign, Anonymous has recently attacked Japanese and Icelandic government and organizational websites, while also championing its cause over social media.
