‘Backoff’ malware compromises POS devices in New Orleans restaurant

Anyone who used payment cards at Mizado Cocina between May 9 and July 18 may have had their data compromised, the New Orleans restaurant announced on Tuesday, explaining that its point-of-sale (POS) devices had been compromised with Backoff malware.

Information believed to be compromised includes names, credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and CVV codes.

Roughly 8,000 customers used payment cards while the POS devices were infected, NOLA.com reported on Tuesday, citing a spokesperson with the restaurant.

Mizado Cocina removed the threat and replaced the impacted devices, making it safe to use payment cards as of July 18, according to the notification. The eatery first noticed a problem earlier in the summer when guests that had recently dined at the restaurant began reporting fraudulent charges.

A free year of identity theft protection services is being offered to impacted patrons.
