Calif. Big Blue Bus customers possibly affected by breach

The Big Blue Bus, part of the Santa Monica, Calif. bus transit system, issued a warning of a possible data breach involving customers who use a transit software program called NextBus.

Big Blue Bus told the Santa Monica Daily Press that anyone who had created an account with NextBus, which tells riders when a bus is arriving at a particular stop, should reset their password. NextBus believes unauthorized access to its database may have taken place. The type of information possibly compromised does not include Social Security Numbers (SSNs), driver's license information or any financial data, the company said.

NextBus disabled the compromised account that allowed access to its system, but customers should now be on the watch for phishing attacks that use NextBus to help convince targets to open the email.
