Network Security

Chris Hadnagy, chief human hacker, Social-Engineer, Inc.

What was your first job?
When I was 12 a friend and I started a window cleaning company.

What do you think most people imagine your job as?
Have you ever seen Sneakers, the Robert Redford movie? Most people think it is all just like that – just more technologically advanced.

If you were to describe yourself as a household object, what would it be?
A blow torch… wait, is that a normal household object?  Then I would say a mirror, I try to mirror back what you want to see.

What would your last meal be?
Hrm… if I were dying tomorrow I would definitely want something very fancy. A delicious lamb roast with grilled asparagus accompanied by a beautiful bottle of wine.

If you had to have an occupation other than the one you're doing, what would you do?
A chef.  I love to cook and to eat.

What is the most important personality trait for a successful cyber security professional?
Passion. The bad guys have it. They love what they do. You have to love what you do so you want to go the extra mile.

What technology did you used to rely on, and are now happy is obsolete?
Nothing. I love technology. The things I relied on just got better.

What is the best career advice you ever received?
Two things I was told that help me get where I am. Be willing to take risks – don't let fear hold you back from trying something. Failure is a great way to learn. Lastly, never be too arrogant to take a lesson from anyone.  Everyone has something to teach even if it is the wrong way to do something.
