The U.S. Justice Department released a review of the FBI's impersonation of an Associated Press (AP) editor to infect a suspect with malware.
In 2007, during the investigation into a series of bomb threats to a high school near Seattle, an undercover agent posed as a journalist to contact the suspect and later send them a link to fake news articles which actually contained malware designed to disclose the suspect's location, according to the report.
Later that year, news outlets reported the means in which authorities located the suspect but it wasn't until 2014 that details concerning the impersonation were revealed.
The report describes the FBI policies which were in place at the time of the investigation which would have provided guidance for the agent's actions and details the subsequent backlash that followed when news of the investigation broke.
