EFF to host DefCon 23 badge hacking contest

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has announced its first DefCon 23 Badge Hack Contest, in a release last week. Each year the convention provides attendees with high tech badges consisting of circuit boards, LED's, and cryptographic puzzles.

Senior membership advocate with EFF Aaron Jue told SCMagazine.com via email correspondence that the goal is to see what someone can create out of the badges once hardware restrictions have been lifted.

Participants can enter into one of three categories and may compete in the Digital, Analog or Wild Card divisions. The first two divisions will respectively use circuit and analog-based badges from previous DefCon conventions while the Wild Card group will use badges from other hacker conventions.

A panel of guest judges, many of whom have designed previous DefCon Badges, will rate the contestants based on originality, form, utility and overall execution. EFF will name a winner in each category.
