Fake Malaysia Airlines video on Facebook spreads malware

The delay in solving the mystery of missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 has given spammers the opportunity to spread malware using fake Facebook post to lure users to malicious websites, an ABC News affiliate has reported.

Claiming that the “Malaysia Plane MH370 Has Been Spotted Somewhere Near Bermuda Triangle,” or variations on that theme, the post encourages users to click on the “shocking video” just released to view breaking footage.

Duped users are redirected to malicious phishing sites and prompted to share the video before watching it, thus legitimizing the video to the phishing victim's friend list and a sure indication that the link leads to something malicious.

Phishing campaigns disguised as “breaking news” are often successful in snaring victims who are otherwise wary of clicking on links.
