Florida Navy hospital loses laptop

A laptop, which contained a database of personal information about patients, recently went missing from Naval Hospital Pensacola in Florida.

How many victims? 38,000.

What type of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers and birthdates.

What happened? The database on the missing laptop contained the personal information of all patients that used the pharmacy in the last year. It was last seen Aug. 18 and had a damaged exterior so it may have been disposed of. No health information was included in the database.

Quote: "We regret any inconvenience or undue concern this may cause,” Captain Maryalice Morro, commanding officer told Fox10tv.com. "We take this potential data compromise very seriously and continue to strive to protect and secure your PII."

What was the response? Letters have been sent to affected individuals. The command is reviewing all security protocols to ensure the protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) in the future. In addition, employees will be given training on the use, protection and security of PII and Personal Health Information.
