FTC shuts down operations of computer repair scammers

Orders requested by the Federal Trade Commission and Florida to shut down two telemarketing operations that conned thousands of customers have been granted by a federal court.

The court temporarily halted the operations of the companies that made more than $120 million off of customers by deceptively marketing computer software, according to a recent release.

Since 2012, the defendants leveraged software to dupe consumers into believing their computers had issues, only to then pressure them with sales pitches to buy into tech support services for problems that didn't exist.

Once the software claimed the victim's machine had problems, it prompted them to purchase a paid version of the software for $29 to $49. The software then prompted victims to call a toll-free number to “activate” the software, however, they were connected to telemarketers that pitched them computer repair services.
