Georgetown University confirms cyberattack, says no data compromised

A cyberattack at Georgetown University didn't compromise any data, school officials confirmed.

The university sent an email to its community saying that an outage experienced as a result of the attack came from a firewall closing the network in order to protect the system and data, according to NBC Washington.

School IT pros and outside consultants said the university's system is still secure.

“All institutions are regularly targeted by cyberattacks, and Georgetown is no exception,” NBC quoted the email as saying. “We take these issues very seriously and are working to ensure our technology systems are as safe and strong as they can be.”

Officials encouraged the community to take care opening email attachments or clicking on links from unknown sources.

The university said the incident was not linked to an alleged ransomware attack at Georgetown's clinic partner, MedStar.
