Government and private partnerships to be explored at SC World Congress

Getting the government and private sectors to partner on IT security initiatives is no easy chore, but there are a number of people tasked with just such a challenge.

Karen Evans, administrator for e-government and IT at the federal Office of Management and Budget, is perhaps one of the more visible proponents of a partnership between federal and state government and private entities. Evans will be speaking at next month's SC World Congress, being held at the Javits Center in New York on Dec. 9 and 10.

She pointed out that in May 2006, the President's Task Force on Identity Theft was established by Executive Order 13402, launching a new era in the fight against identity theft.

“One great example of what we are doing in conjunction with the private industry is educating how to avoid identity theft,” Evans said.

“President Bush called for a coordinated approach among government agencies to combat this crime," she said. "The task force examined the tools law enforcement can use to prevent, investigate and prosecute ID theft crimes; recover the proceeds of these crimes and ensure just and effective punishment of ID thieves."

Evans opens the SC World Congress with a plenary session, “A view from the top,” that takes place on at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 and is open to all attendees.
Illena Armstrong, editor-in-chief of SC Magazine, moderates the discussion, which will detail how legitimate businesses and government agencies can better police and combat modern-day malefactors to protect our society.

One strategy that Evans will highlight in her presentation is the role of education in alerting both government and public computer users to look out for threats.

Education has played a key role in combating ID theft, she explained, by having government agencies and the private sector inform individuals and corporate citizens on best practices.
