Hard drive containing State Street data stolen

A storage drive containing the personal information of 5,500 State Street employees and 40,000 customers was stolen while in possession of a data analysis firm.

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers.

What was the response? State Street, a financial services firm based in Massachusetts, plans to offer free credit monitoring for two years to affected individuals.

Details: The data was originally encrypted when it was transferred from State Street to the third-party vendor, but that company decrypted it when it stored it to the stolen hard drive. Authorities do not believe any of the information has been misused. The incident happened in December and State Street learned about it in January but failed to notify anyone until now because it was determining exactly who was affected.
