Health care breaches continue to rise, over 30M affected

As breaches hitting the health care industry continue to ramp up, more than 30 million individuals have been affected by these incidents.

An analysis by the Washington Post on data provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, indicates that 944 incidents have been reported to the agency since federal reporting on events affecting more than 500 individuals began being enforced in 2009.

Those breaches have affected 30.1 million people thus far. However, they do not include the numbers tied to the recent Community Health Systems breach that may have hit more than four million patients.

Of the incidents reported, 17.4 million are because of theft, 7.2 million are tied to data loss, 3.6 million attributed to hacking and 1.9 million were a result of unauthorized access to accounts.
