Google releases Chrome 7 stable channel update

Google on Tuesday released a "stable channel" version of its Chrome 7 web browser, with fixes for a number of vulnerabilities. Version 7.0.517.41 for Windows, Mac and Linux includes fixes for at least 11 flaws, which could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, cause a denial-of-service, conduct URL spoofing or bypass security restrictions, according to an advisory from the US-CERT. The one critical flaw listed in the bunch could cause a browser crash due to an issue involving the form auto-fill capability. Of the remaining flaws, five were rated "high," three were listed "medium" and one "low." — AM
 

Symantec buys RuleSpace for URL filtering technology

Symantec has acquired RuleSpace, provider of web content categorization products and services, for an undisclosed sum. Portland, Ore.-based RuleSpace is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), most attractive to Symantec for its URL filtering technology that is used in enterprise and consumer security solutions. The acquisition was quietly announced - neither company distributed a press release. However, the RuleSpace website on Wednesday said that the company is now part of Symantec. The two reportedly have been close partners, and a deal was rumored. — DK

N.Y. congresswoman to review cybersecurity goals

Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., tentatively will be at the SC World Congress to discuss how state representatives are working to help the private sector to tackle today's cybersecurity threats. Clarke, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and Chair of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology, plans to review not only the various initiatives underway to thwart everything from identity theft to cyberterrorism, but also just how private organizations can help with her committees' information security initiatives. Her keynote is slated for Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at the SC World Congress, which is taking place from Nov. 10 to 11 at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers in New York City. — IA
