The House of Representatives banded together on Friday and voted 291-122 to pass the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act.
The act gives the Secretary of Health and Human Services two days to notify individuals who have personally identifiable information (PII) compromised in a breach related to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Notification will now be mandated upon “discovery of a breach of security of any system maintained by an Exchange established under” the Affordable Care Act, according to the act. That includes the HealthCare.gov website, which was criticized by the public for being slow and chastised by experts for being hastily developed and vulnerable to attacks.
President Barack Obama was said to have opposed the act, reportedly stating that it created “unrealistic and costly paperwork requirements.”
