Information missing about Maryland state employees

The personal information about thousands of Maryland state employees has gone missing.

How many victims? About 8,000.

What type of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers and other unspecified personal information.

What happened? A torn and empty envelope from the company that manages the state's health savings account program arrived by U.S. mail. The envelope was missing an invoice that contains confidential information.

Details: No fraud has been reported.

What was the response? Employees have been notified by the state to place a fraud alert with national credit rating agencies. Future reports will be transmitted electronically.
