International response to cyberthreats focus of SC World Congress panel

Terrorism is without question a worldwide problem on any number of levels. But by the very nature of the medium, cyberterrorism is international and borderless by definition and needs to be treated in such a fashion for the security of all of us.

This will be the focus of discussion for a panel, International response to cyberthreats, part of the two-day SC World Congress, beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 9 and continuing on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

“Our world has changed quickly, and technology now underlies virtually everything we do,” says Howard Schmidt, president, Information Security Forum; and former White House cybersecurity advisor. “This is not only true for us as individuals, it is true for our governments as well. Our nation's security, public safety and financial infrastructure rely on an intricate and interconnected foundation of robust information technology. Increasingly, this national cyberspace infrastructure is under constant attack from sources known and unknown.”

Schmidt will be moderating this international panel, taking place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 2:45 p.m., that features experts who face this challenge daily. They will discuss their respective experiences and offer insight.

Panelists include Mohd Noor Amin, chairman, management board, International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber-Terrorism (IMPACT); Andrea Piroti, executive director, ENISA; and Dr. Hamadoun I. Touré, ITU Secretary-General. Howard Schmidt, president, Information Security Forum; and former White House cybersecurity advisor, moderates.

“Cybercrime often doesn't get a lot of attention outside of the technology industry and many of us feel that it should,” says Schmidt. “The economic impact of a serious cyberattack on our critical infrastructure has shown in the past that the impact could be global in nature in a short period of time.”
