IT managers see spyware as top threat in 2005

IT managers believe spyware will be the top threat to network security this year, according to a poll conducted by security supplier WatchGuard Technologies.

Sixty-six percent of the roughly 700 administrators polled said spyware - software installed without a user's knowledge to monitor web surfing or keystrokes - will be more of a threat to their networks than viruses or phishing attacks in 2005.

About the same percentage - 65 percent - said their networks were less protected from spyware than viruses and phishing. However, only 38 percent say spyware is a priority for company executives while 54 percent still focus on viruses.
