‘Lock Down Your Login’ campaign urges authentication, furthers CNAP

On the eve of the 13th annual National Cyber Awareness Month and as an underpinning to President Obama's Cybersecurity National Action Plan (CNAP), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) has joined forces with the White House with more than 35 companies and NGOs in a new internet safety and security campaign called “Lock Down Your Login,” which advocates for the adoption of strong authentication.

The campaign, which fulfills a CNAP mandate to promote internet safety and security, is meant to “educate the general public about the importance of using authentication,” NCSA's Executive Director Michael Kaiser told SCMagazine.com.  “It is to everyone's benefit to do it.”

Despite high profile breaches, like the recent one recently perpetrated on Yahoo in which alleged nation-state actors stole account information belonging to at least 500 million users, the NCSA noted in a release. That 72 percent of Americans still believe that usernames and passwords are sufficient to keep their online accounts safe. Kaiser noted that organizations and individuals have a number of authentication methods from which to choose – tokens, biometrics, text messaging and the like. “Authentication is not monolithic,” he said, urging companies “to use the resources they already have toward authentication.”
