Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance presented a 394-count indictment on Tuesday against members of an identity theft ring.
Following an investigation led by the Manhattan DA's Cybercrime and Identity Theft Bureau, five individuals were arrested for allegedly stealing personal data belonging to 200 victims, which let them steal thousands of dollars through a credit card scheme, according to a release by Vance's office.
Charges include grand larceny, identify theft, and scheme to fraud. Two of the defendants have been charged with unlawful possession of personal identifying information.
The stolen personal data was used to apply for credit cards offered by Apple, in partnership with Barclaycard. Once approved, the cards could be used immediately at Apple stores.
The credit cards were allegedly used by the defendants to purchase Apple gift cards that were later used to buy products such as laptops.
