Meet President Bennett

While Congress has yet to act on key data security legislation, the 3-year-old Cyber Security Industry Alliance has been pivotal in keeping the 535 lawmakers' minds thinking IT security despite many obvious distractions, namely that controversial war in Iraq.

It's a good thing, considering the CSIA is the only lobby and advocacy group dedicated to security and privacy.

Today comes news that the alliance has appointed a new president. I emphasize the title because the group's chief officer used to be called an executive director.

While the title change is subtle, it signifies that the CSIA is only going to continue to flex its muscles and extend its reach beyond the halls of Congress.

Now 17 members strong and fresh off a European headquarters opening in Brussels, Belgium, the CSIA hired Tim Bennett, a 25-year public policy veteran who may not be an information security whiz but is well familiar with the power of global buy-in. His background certainly will benefit him in a still infant field such as cybersecurity, where guidelines can't be produced quickly enough to keep stride with the technology - and the thieves.

Good luck, Mr. President.
