QUICK READ

  • Strengths: Scans operating systems and network devices for vulnerabilities.
  • Weaknesses: None that we found.
  • Verdict: Ease of use is the key for this one. and that makes it worth looking at for busy security administrators.
SecureScout from netVigilance is a powerful vulnerability scanner packed into a surprisingly simple-to-use application. The SecureScout focuses on accuracy using tests that exceed all PCI testing requirements, detecting up to 97 percent of all network vulnerabilities. This product not only scans almost any operating system you can think of, but it can also scan servers, such as SMTP and FTP, routers, switches, applications and services.

We had this product up and running in about five minutes. The installation executable takes just a few seconds to run and the default installation is all that is necessary. After installation is complete, just copy the license file and start the application. There are quite a few steps to go through from here, but they are more tedious than complicated. These steps are well detailed in the getting-started guide, and when complete, the application is up and configured. We found the management interface to be easy and intuitive to navigate with a clean and organized layout.

The one thing that we really liked about this product was how organized and easy to navigate it was. The navigation pane allows for very granular filtering so it is easy to get to scan results quickly. Some of the categories include filtering by platform, impact, risk, level and CVE code. While it did not matter much in our little test bed, we find that in an enterprise this filtering capability simplifies finding problems.

Documentation includes a getting start guide, as well as a user guide. The getting-started guide provides detailed setup and configuration instructions to get the product up and running. The user guide takes over from there and provides in-depth instructions on using the product and product features. Both guides include many screen shots and configuration examples.

NetVigilance includes 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. email, phone and installation support five days a week with the purchase of the product ,as well as ongoing updates and product upgrades for 12 months. Customers can also purchase 24/7 support for 25 percent of the license price, and onsite support at an extra fee. There is also a small support section available on the website, which includes an FAQ section and user forum.

At just under $10,000, we find this product to be an excellent value for the money. SecureScout provides solid scanning capability across a large array of operating systems as well as network devices.
