Trustwave, Symantec make acquisitions

Compliance management vendor Trustwave announced on Tuesday the acquisition of data encryption vendor BitArmor. Trustwave plans to integrate BitArmor's file- and full-disk encryption technology into its current data leakage prevention and endpoint security solution to help clients comply with regulations that are increasing the demand for encryption. Meanwhile, Symantec on Tuesday announced plans to buy Gideon Technologies, provider of IT risk automation, to better serve public-sector customers. Terms of both deals were not disclosed. — AM
 

Twitter hackers compromise Chinese search engine

The same band of hackers responsible for the DNS records hijack of Twitter last month launched an apparent similar attack on leading Chinese search engine Baidu, according to published reports. For several hours on Monday night EST, visitors to the site were redirected to a page announcing that the site had been overtaken by the Iranian Cyber Army. Baidu blamed the problem on an "external manipulation" of its domain name server in the United States. The site was operating normally on Tuesday. It is unclear what the motive of the attack was. — DK
 

Henry tapped to run FBI's Washington Field Office

Shawn Henry, one of the most recognizable names in cybercrime enforcement, has been promoted to head of the FBI's Washington Field Office, considered one of the agency's most coveted posts, the FBI said Monday. A 20-year veteran, Henry, 47, most recently served as assistant director of the Cyber Division at the FBI where he was tasked with overseeing all FBI computer investigations worldwide. — DK
