Searches for Apple iPad poisoned to distribute rogue AV

Cybercriminals have launched a black hat search engine optimization (SEO) campaign exploiting the interest surrounding Apple's newly released tablet computer, iPad, according to researchers at web security vendor Websense. Searches for "apple tablet announcement" have been poisoned by attackers and now yield a malicious link within the top five search results for site promoting rogue anti-virus products. Other recent SEO campaigns have leveraged the crisis in Haiti, the movie "Avatar" and Google's new Nexus One smartphone. - AM
 

Second Scientology hacker admits guilt

A Nebraska man on Monday agreed to plead guilty to participating in a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that took down the Church of Scientology website in January 2008. Brian Thomas Mettenbrink, 20, of Grand Island, Neb., agreed to serve a one-year prison sentence, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice. Mettenbrink was part of an underground group, called Anonymous, that led protests against the church. Last May, Dmitriy Guzner, a 19-year-old New Jersey man, pleaded guilty for his role in the attacks and was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison. - AM

Chrome 4.0 released to address several flaws

Chrome 4.0.249.78 for Windows addresses 13 vulnerabilities, six of which are rated "high" in severity, according to Google's release notes.
 

Approximately 5.5 million webpages infected in Q4 '09

Approximately 560,000 websites - and 5.5 million webpages on those sites - were infected with malware during the fourth quarter of 2009, according to data gathered by web anti-malware vendor Dasient. These numbers represent a decrease from Q3 of 2009, when 640,000 websites and 5.8 million webpages were infected. During Q4, however, malware infections spread to a greater number of pages on each site compared to Q3. Newly infected sites with at least 10 pages had malware on an average of 23 percent of pages, up from 19 percent in the previous quarter. — AM

Bruce Rutherford named chair, PCI Security Standards Council

Bruce Rutherford of MasterCard was named chairperson today of The PCI Security Standards Council, an organization that drives education and awareness of the PCI Data Security Standard and other best practices to increase payment data security. In the position, Rutherford, who is group head, fraud management solutions, payment system integrity at MasterCard, is charged with increasing adoption of the PCI standards and to refine the next version. - GM
