Apple pushes new QuickTime, iTunes

Apple on Tuesday released QuickTime 7.6.6 to resolve 12 vulnerabilities, all of which could lead to arbitrary code execution. In most cases, the vulnerabilities could be exploited if a user is tricked into viewing a malicious movie file. Eleven of the flaws impact Mac OS X, Windows 7, Vista and XP Service Pack 2. The other does not impact Macs. Also on Tuesday, Apple distributed iTunes 9.1 to close off seven holes. — DK

SEC wins judgment against stock options hacker

A U.S. District Court has ordered a Ukrainian man to pay $580,000, as well as civil penalties, after he traded stock options based on knowledge he obtained from hacking into the computer network of IMS Health, a company that provides the pharmaceutical industry with with sales data and consulting services. According to the federal Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Oleksandr Dorozhko purchased 630 "put options," which gives the buyer the option to sell at a given price, knowing that IMS Health planned to announced worse-than-expected earnings later that day. Dorozhko made $287,346 by selling the options after the company's stock price dropped 28 percent, the SEC said Monday. — DK

Gonzalez co-conspirator sentenced to seven years

Another co-conspirator to hacker Albert Gonzalez was sentenced Monday in federal court in Boston to seven years in prison for playing a major role in the BJ's Wholesale Club and TJX hacks. Christopher Scott of Miami pleaded guilty in September to charges of unlawful access to computers, access device fraud, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering, according to court documents. Scott is latest person involved in the crime ring to be sentenced. The ringleader Gonzalez last week received a record-breaking hacking sentence of 20 years. — AM
 

Microsoft pushes emergency browser fix for 10 bugs

Microsoft on Tuesday released an out-of-cycle fix for an actively exploited vulnerability, plus nine other Internet Explorer flaws.

Court documents unsealed Friday name JCPenney and another retailer as additional targets of notorious hacker Albert Gonzalez' cybercriminal gang.
 

P2P ban bill gets House approval, on to Senate

The U.S. House of Representatives last week passed legislation that would restrict the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) software on federal computers. The Secure Federal File Sharing Act, introduced by Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y., bans the "recreational" use of file-sharing software on federal systems and networks, including those owned by government contractors. The federal Office of Management and Budget must approve other uses in a case-by-case basis. The bill, which the U.S. Senate now will consider, comes in response to several incidents of sensitive documents being exposed in federal file-sharing networks. — DK
