Adobe patches Shockwave Player, ColdFusion

Adobe on Tuesday issued an update to its Shockwave Player to close 18 "critical" vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers to run malware on victims' machines, according to a security bulletin. In addition, the company also pushed out an update for ColdFusion, a web application development platform, to rectify three "important" vulnerabilities which could result in cross-site scripting and information disclosure, a second bulletin said. None of the flaws are being actively exploited, an Adobe spokeswoman said. — DK

A "highly critical" zero-day vulnerability has been discovered in Apple's Safari web browser, according to Danish vulnerability tracking firm, Secunia.

Foxit Software has released a new version (3.3) of its alternative PDF reader to contain a feature that prevents users from launching malicious executables buried in PDF files. The functionality, known as Secure Trust Manager, "enables users to allow or deny unauthorized actions and data transmission, including URL connection, attachments PDF actions, and JavaScript functions; efficiently avoiding the attack from malicious contents and viruses." The addition arrives after Adobe last month acknowledged that a design flaw in the "/Launch" function of Adobe Reader could be exploited by an attacker to launch scripts or .exe files embedded in PDF files. — DK
