Personal info of more than 1,100 UC Davis vet school applicants hacked
Where did the breach take place? The University of California, Davis graduate School of Veterinary Medicine.How many victims? A hacker gained access to the personal info of 1,100 students, and possibly 375 applicants for the 2004-05 school year.
What kind of personal information? Names, birth dates and Social Security numbers.
When was the breach discovered? On June 15, accepted applicants notified the school that accounts had already been set up in their names.
What was the response? The university sent emails and letters to applicants and students whose information as breached and advised them to place a fraud alert on their accounts. The university will also pay for a one-year credit monitoring service for victims.
Quote: “We are working with law enforcement officials to determine how the campus computer-security was penetrated and to track those who are responsible,” said Dean Bennie Osburn.
