A trio of students from St Petersburg State University in Russia have been dubbed world champions in the 40th annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) finals.
The event, was hosted at Prince of Songkla University in Phuket, Thailand. Over 1,400 next gen developers from 40 countries came to compete on elite level programming. In addition to the competition, the event sponsor IBM allowed students exposure to their latest technologies.
“These students are the future leaders of our industry and we are committed to fostering their development with these critical technologies as they prepare to enter the global workforce,” said Gerald Lane, ACM-ICPC sponsorship executive and director, IBM open technologies & IP.
Each of the 128 university teams that competed were comprised of three students to solve a series of complex real-world problems in five hours, with only access to one computer and calculator. The teams came from local and regional ICPC competitions from last fall, where selection took place from a field of over 300,000 students in computing disciplines worldwide.
The top twelve teams received medals: four teams won gold, four won silver and four won bronze. According to the scoreboard, Imperial College London, which was the only team representing the UK in the finals placed 92nd out of 128.
