Scottish bank experiences DDoS attack

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) experienced a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack last week that shut down its site and prevented customers from accessing their bank accounts. The attack came less than a week after a separate system failure yielded similar problems.

In response, the bank tweeted a link to a different website to access its services. The financial institution also issued an apology and noted that users faced no risks.

RBS addressed the issue within an hour, according to The Guardian

Although the problem was resolved quickly, last week's Cyber Monday shutdown lasted longer than a day and affected more than one million UK customers who were unable to withdraw money from ATM machines, make online purchases or carry out transactions online or via mobile services.
