Seattle Public Schools data improperly released, at least 8,000 students affected

Seattle Public Schools is notifying parents that a law firm attained by the district to handle a complaint against the district inadvertently sent personal information on as few as 8,000 special education students to an individual involved in the case.

How many victims? As few as 8,000 special education students. 

What type of personal information? Names, addresses, student identification numbers, test scores, disabilities, and many more personal details.

What happened? A law firm attained by the district to handle a complaint against the district inadvertently sent the personal information to an individual involved in the case.

What was the response? The district is working to ensure that the improperly released records are retrieved or destroyed. The law firm has been removed from the case. Letters are being sent to parents of affected students.

Details: The information was sent late Tuesday night. An active member of the Special Education PTSA told KING 5 that the information was mistakenly released to another PTSA member. That PTSA member notified Seattle Public Schools that he was given documents that had not been redacted.
