Subject matter experts (SME) are the hot property at many leading consultancy firms.

What it takes
Candidates need to be recognized as “the expert” in any one of a number of niches in the IT space. This expertise has been gained by performing functions at leading vendors or corporations, speaking at events, writing articles in appropriate journals and serving on boards.

Compensation
Since SMEs tend to benefit the sales function of an organization and help the partners close millions in deals, they are paid very well – $125k to $225k with on-target earnings of $175k to $400k.
