Stolen computer equipment at Connecticut school presents ID theft risk

What happened? A burglar stole computer equipment, including two storage devices, from the IT department at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn.

How many victims? An unknown number of former students at the high school.

What kind of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers and contact information from when the victims were students.

What was the response? The school notified victims in an Aug. 3 letter, advising them to monitor their credit files. The school also plans to review its security policies.

Details: The school's headmaster sent an email to staff warning them that not all of the data on the stolen devices may have been encrypted. But officials believe the equipment was stolen for its value, not for the information it contained.

Quote: "We have no reason to believe that the files containing your personal information have been discovered and/or misused by the perpetrators." - Headmaster Russel Weigel in a letter to victims.
