The Network Security Inspector from Sunbelt Software is a network vulnerability scanner using a database of over 4,000 ranked multiplatform vulnerabilities. This product can perform comprehensive vulnerability assessment without causing interruptions to the machines being scanned. The tool not only detects vulnerabilities, but also shows how to remediate the threat by providing locations where, if any, applicable patches can be downloaded to fix the machine.

Installation was simple and the installer came pre-packaged with the necessary prerequisites to install the tool. After installation was complete, we launched the console application and we were almost completely setup. We found the console itself to be easy to use and intuitive to navigate, but the initial configuration can be a little time-consuming. This product can be set up to do very customized scans, so there are a number of options that need to be configured, such as authentication groups, vulnerability groups, port groups and so on.

After the initial configuration was complete, we found this product had a great amount of scanning flexibility. The scanning policy can be configured with various discovery methods and be assigned to specific groups of machines. We also found that the Policy Wizard really streamlined setting up scans. With a simple click of the scan button we were off and scanning.

Documentation provided with this product included a quick-start guide and a user guide. Both of the guides included many screen shots, examples and step-by-step instructions.

Sunbelt offers both email and phone technical support for one year included with the purchase price. After that, support is offered at a fee of 15 to 29 percent of list price for additional years and/or premier maintenance. There is also support available on the website, including a knowledge base, technical documentation and product update downloads.

At a price starting at just under $880 and ranging up to about $3,500, we find this product to be a good value for the money. This product offers a lot of functionality and flexibility at fairly reasonable price.
