Symantec posts big loss

Symantec on Wednesday reported third-quarter revenue of $1.51 billion, beating analyst estimates. But the security giant lost $6.8 billion, compared with net income of $132 million for the same quarter last fiscal year. The loss was mainly due to a "goodwill impairment" charge. This write-off enabled the company to claim it delivered stronger-than-expected results on all of its key financial metrics for the quarter. Shares rose about 4.5 percent. -- CAM
