Trend Micro to acquire anti-spyware supplier

Trend Micro has inked an agreement for its U.S. subsidiary to acquire InterMute, a maker of anti-spyware products.

The Tokyo-based antivirus supplier said InterMute's technology will boost its anti-spyware solutions for both its business and consumer customers.

InterMute provides a product that helps users remove spyware but also is flexible enough so users can chose programs they want to keep, such as adware, Trend Micro executives said.

"Spyware continues to evolve and cause concern and damage, but not all spyware can be handled the way viruses and worms are," Eva Chen, Trend Micro CEO, said in a statement. "Customers need effective solutions to remove spyware, but must also be given the flexibility on how to manage it."

Trend Micro said it plans to offer InterMute's stand-alone anti-spyware products under the Trend Micro brand. The company also plans to integrate InterMute's anti-spyware capabilitites into its products.

The deal is subject to completion of due diligence.
