ETSI releases identity management specifications

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), a nonprofit that produces standards for information and communications technologies, has completed a set of identity management specifications which outline how users can safely gain authorized access to data and services. The free specifications, which are aimed at network operators, internet service providers and systems designers, address access control issues related to third-parties and cloud environments. The specifications were created by ETSI's identity and access management for networks and services group, whose members include Nokia Siemens Networks, Alcatel Lucent, the University of Patras in Greece, and the University of Murcia in Spain.

Edentify partners with FNB Merchants

Edentify, provider of identity management and fraud detection solutions, has partnered with FNB Merchants (FNBM), maker of authentication solutions. Edentify will blend its identity fraud monitoring software, known as IDAlert, into FNBMs identity protection program. The partnership allows Edentify solutions to be delivered to financial institutions, the major customer base for FNBM.

Symplified appoints Jason Merrick vice president of business development

Symplified, a Boulder, Colo.-based provider of on-demand identity management solutions to enable Enterprise 2.0 to adopt cloud computing, has appointed Jason Merrick vice president of business development. He will be charged with building and managing partnerships for Symplified's open identity and security ecosystem. Previously Merrick served as vice president of worldwide technical sales at wireless security firm AirTight Networks, based in Mountain View, Calif.

Security spending, DLP projects to increase

Information security budgets will get a boost at many organizations in 2010, according to a study released Tuesday by IT research company TheInfoPro. The study, based on interviews of 259 security decision makers at Fortune 1000 and mid-size organizations, found that 40 percent of enterprises are planning to increase their 2010 security budgets. Data leakage prevention topped the list of projects planned for 2010, followed by identity management and compliance initiatives. — AM

Sun delivers fixes

Sun has patched for several vulnerabilities in its Java System Identity Manager. Rated "highly critical" by vulnerability tracking service Secunia, the flaws impact versions 7 and 8. The bugs could be exploited to allow for security bypass, cross-site scripting, data manipulation, information exposure, privilege escalation and system access, according to Secunia. Sun advised users to install the pertinent patches, which were distributed Monday. — DK
