Another data breach to report

The Neiman Marcus breach will get the lion’s share of coverage on the personally identifiable information beat this week, but there’s another case that deserves some attention.

A laptop containing Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, telephone numbers and emergency contact information was stolen last week from the Woodlawn Health Center in Baltimore County, Md., according to a report in the Baltimore Sun

The breach affects about 6,000 patients treated at the clinic between the beginning of 2004 and April 12, 2007.

Conventional wisdom says the thief stole the laptop sell it for a quick profit, not realizing how much the data inside is worth.

The usual rules apply – the affected should closely monitor their credit and place credit alerts on their credit files.

Questions can be directed to the Baltimore County Health Department at (410) 887-2723.
