In addition to bolstering the security of the sensitive information it manages, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston has agreed to pay a $100,000 fine related to its 2012 data breach.
On May 22, 2012 a laptop was stolen from the office of a BIDMC doctor that contained sensitive patient information which included the names and Social Security numbers of 3,900 patients.
Because the information stored on the laptop was unencrypted, Attorney General Martha Coakley's office believes the doctors at the hospital failed to follow policies surrounding the protection of patient data, according to the Boston Globe.
Since the incident the medical center has bolstered the physical security of the hospital, in addition to launching an awareness campaign around data protection and encrypting all devices purchased for work use.
