Karpeles won’t appear in U.S. deposition, cites Treasury subpoena

Until disgraced Mt. Gox founder Mark Karpeles retains legal counsel to represent him in a U.S. Department of Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCen) investigation, he will not come to the United States to give a deposition in the bitcoin exchange's bankruptcy case, according to documents filed with the U.S. bankruptcy court for the northern district of Texas, Dallas division, Reuters has reported.

Federal judge had ordered Karpeles to Dallas this month to answer questions about Mt. Gox's bankruptcy petition, filed in March, after U.S. customers launched a class-action suit to retrieve $400 million in bitcoins that Mt. Gox lost.

His lawyers noted “he is not willing to travel to the U.S.” until the address the FinCen subpoena is addressed. They requested a postponement of the bankruptcy deposition until May 5.
