State asks court for 27-month extension to review Clinton emails

The U.S. Department of State filed a motion in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia requesting a 27-month extension to complete the review of about 14,000 emails related to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton requested by Citizens United under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

The State Department said an initial miscalculation in the number of documents that would fall under the FOIA request resulted in 34,116 new documents being found, of which, 13,679 documents still need to be reviewed. State claims that while working diligently, the process is hampered by the limited number of staffers capable of handling this task. Only 15 part-time workers are assigned to this request, State said.

The motion stated that budgetary limits and training requirements also limit how many reviewers can be hired to handle the request.
