After investigating Mail incident, AOL confirms breach

After investigating a spam incident impacting its Mail users, AOL has revealed that it was victim to a breach.

On Monday, AOL announced via a company blog that it was still looking into a “security incident that involved unauthorized access to AOL's network and systems.”

Last week, reports surfaced that the company had been hacked, resulting in an influx of AOL Mail users having their email accounts targeted by spammers, who spoofed Mail accounts to make messages appear legitimate.

After looking into the incident, the company became privy to a breach where AOL user data was accessed, including email addresses, postal addresses, address book contact information, encrypted passwords and encrypted answers to security questions. As a safety precaution, the company directed any individual using an AOL service to reset their password, and change their security questions and answers.
