Canada's primary privacy watchdog group and other international entities are investigating the Ashley Madison data breach and its operator, Avid Life Media, after stolen data has continued to surface online.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner confirmed to the Toronto Star that it is looking into Avid Life and because of the “global scope of the incident" other countries' privacy groups, including the Australian Information Commissioner, will contribute to the investigation.
The newspaper reported that Canadian law prevents the privacy commissioner from fining companies over data breaches, which is why the bureau often partners with other groups.
Although a new law was passed earlier this year, and makes it mandatory to report breaches in the country, the paper notes that the power to fine companies who fail to report a breach likely won't come until later and after the election.
