Report: PlayStation servers used to share Sony Pictures data

A security researcher claims that PlayStation Network servers were used to serve up compromised information in the recent Sony Pictures leak.

In a Forbes article, Dan Tentler said that Sony's PlayStation Network and Sony Pictures infrastructure may not be quite as isolated from one another as some might assume. Attackers obtaining SSH keys or employee login credentials, for example, could have compromised various divisions of the company, he explained.

Tentler found 75 Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances sharing leaked files through his digging.

“A random guess? Sony is in the habit of releasing video games that are parallel to movies – like the Transformers franchise, for example,” Tentler told the outlet. “Perhaps the [Amazon] EC2 instances are actually shared in small part between the PlayStation Network and Sony Pictures for the promotion of the games, or transferring of image/creative assets…,” he said.
