Google Cloud announced that its BigQuery data warehouse is receiving an additional layer of data security through the introduction of differential privacy technology, SiliconANGLE reports.
The new feature, which is now in public preview, adds errors into a dataset, which serve as noise that hinders threat actors typical techniques for extracting personal information from anonymized customer data. Meanwhile, enterprises would still be able to obtain business insights by analyzing the dataset.
Differential privacy is commonly used to allow inferences and to share data while preventing someone from learning information about an entity in that dataset, according to Google Group product Manager Magda Gianola and software engineer Krzysztof Pachacz.
Google said it plans to include the technology in its upcoming data clean room tool for BigQuery, which enables two organizations to share data with each other via a purpose-built, secure cloud-based environment. The tool is expected to roll out in the third quarter.
