VMware continues to take steps to add more offerings in its secure access service edge platform beyond remote access and security, and is aiming for a broad ecosystem of apps at the edge, SDxCentral reports.
VMware Senior Vice President Sanjay Uppal says the continued transition of applications and workloads to the edge, combined with the creation of edge-first apps, generate opportunities to run those applications, even at least partially, within the SASE point of presence. He adds that there is an opportunity to capitalize on new technologies such as multi-access edge compute to create money-making services.
“What do you put on top of the modernization?” Uppal said. “You monetize by putting services on top… and SASE is a prime example of the kind of service you put on top.”
In line with this, VMware has announced the general availability of Cloud Web Security, its new SASE security service that is delivered through its network of 150 PoPs worldwide and linked to its overall SASE offering.
Cloud Web Security uses technologies acquired through the company’s 2019 tie-up with Meno Security, and features SSL proxy with decryption and a URL filter. Traffic is also analyzed for known day-zero malware threats and virus signatures upon passing through the PoP.
