California recently passed two bills into law that will establish privacy standards for automatic license plate readers, and stingrays.
California state Senate Bill 34 requires security protections for data collected by automatic license plate readers, including a mandate to report breaches of information collected, according to an Oct. 8 release.
Senate Bill 741 sets transparency and privacy standards for cell phone interception devices to ensure that stingray- like cellphone intercept devices are used only to catch criminals and not infringe on the public's personal privacy.
Both bills require public disclosure about the use or acquisition of said technology by a public agency and require all operators to have a privacy policy posted to their website.
These laws were passed the same week as CalECPA, a digital privacy bill that included more guidelines for stingray use.
