Texas man receives 14 more charges for brute-force attack

A Texas man who attempted to access the Hidalgo County server received additional charges this past week.

In addition to his charge of attempting to gain unauthorized access, Fidel Salinas, 27, now faces 14 more charges, according to a release. Salinas allegedly attempted to access the county's server multiple times between November 2011 and January 2012, and on one January day, made more than 14,000 attempts to access the administration management page.

His attacks cost more than $10,000. Each charge could result in up to 10 years in federal prison.

Salinas used an SQL injection attack method called brute force to try and gain access. He also claims to have ties to hacktivist collective Anonymous through online chats with members.
