Geolocation data collection pervasive among leading mobile carriers

CyberScoop reports that geolocation data is being collected by 10 of the 15 leading mobile carriers in the U.S. without an opt-out option. Mobile carriers have been keeping geolocation data for two years to five years, while only seven of the respondents noted having the data encrypted, according to a report from the Federal Communications Commission. The findings were published by the FCC after it had requested mobile carriers to detail their geolocation data collection practices amid concerns that such information may be leveraged by law enforcement in cracking down on abortion seekers following the overturning of the Roe v. Wade ruling. "Our mobile phones know a lot about us. That means carriers know who we are, who we call, and where we are at any given moment. This information and geolocation data is really sensitive. Its a record of where weve been and who we are. Thats why the FCC is taking steps to ensure this data is protected," said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. FCC's Enforcement Bureau has already been tasked by Rosenworcel to conduct a follow-up investigation regarding carriers' adherence to FCC rules mandating the reporting of geolocation data usage and sharing practices.
