Secure-by-design space systems pushed amid increased cyber threats

Ongoing cyberattacks against satellite communications systems have prompted Space Systems Cybersecurity Standard working group members to call for the development of secure-by-design specifications for space system components, CyberScoop reports. "The ambition is to just rule out a whole bunch of classes on security issues for future generations of space systems, not looking backwards necessarily," said working group chair and Cornell University professor Gregory Falco. Meanwhile, Polytechnique Montreal associate professor and group member Gunes Karabulut Kurt emphasized the importance of standardization amid increasingly sophisticated attacks, while Falco noted the need for the greater participation of various experts in the development of space system cybersecurity guidance. "We need cyber folks at the table. And we need we need space people at the table. We also need the policy folks at the table too, because we need someone to ultimately inform the future policy thats written that will help people to comply with the standard, right? So we need all walks of life engaged in this process from all over the world," Falco added.
